A general overview, not legal advice
Age verification laws change quickly, and the details (which sites are covered, which methods count, what data may be kept) differ from place to place. This page is a general overview to help creators and fans understand the landscape. Site operators should get legal advice for the regions they serve.
Why self declaration is no longer enough
For years, adult sites asked visitors to click a button confirming they were adults. Lawmakers in several countries decided that this does not protect anyone under 18, and they now require "age assurance" that actually checks. Age verification for websites with adult content has moved from a voluntary best practice to a legal duty in a growing list of places.
United States, state by state
There is no single federal age verification law for adult sites in the US. Instead, more than twenty states have passed their own laws since Louisiana's took effect in 2023. Examples include Louisiana, Utah, Virginia, Mississippi, Texas, Florida and Tennessee, and more states keep adding similar rules. Most require commercial sites with a substantial share of adult content to use a reasonable age verification method, typically a government ID check or a method based on transactional data, and many limit what data may be kept afterwards. In 2025 the US Supreme Court upheld the Texas law, which encouraged more states to follow.
United Kingdom, the Online Safety Act
Under the Online Safety Act, services that show pornographic content to users in the UK must use "highly effective" age assurance. The regulator, Ofcom, has published guidance on which methods qualify, and enforcement of these duties began in 2025. Ofcom has said simple self declaration and general terms of service do not meet the standard.
France and the rest of Europe
France requires adult sites to verify age under its 2024 law on securing the digital space, with a technical standard from the regulator Arcom that includes privacy protections. Other European countries, Italy among them, have introduced or are applying their own rules, and EU level work on age assurance continues. The direction is the same everywhere: real checks, with limits on how much personal data is kept.
The main age verification methods compared
| Method | How it works | Strengths | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Document plus live selfie | Photo of a government ID, matched to a live selfie | Strong, accepted under most laws | Needs an ID and takes a minute |
| Facial age estimation | A selfie is analyzed to estimate age, nothing is matched to a name | Fast, no document needed | An estimate, so a buffer is used |
| Card or bank based checks | An adult only payment or bank record confirms age | Familiar for paying users | Not accepted everywhere, cards can be shared |
| Self declaration | A checkbox or button | Easy | Not accepted under the new laws |
A card check alone is often not enough, which our page on OnlyFans card verification explains from the fan's side. Creator side checks are covered in OnlyFans age verification.
What good age verification does with your data
Fans worry, reasonably, about handing ID to adult sites. Good practice limits the damage: the check is done by an identity verification partner, the result is stored as "verified" rather than the full document wherever the law allows, the ID is never shown to creators and the check is not repeated on every visit.
How OnlyEighteen applies age verification to every fan, everywhere
Most platforms check fan age only where a law forces them to. OnlyEighteen checks every fan before the first purchase and before the first explicit post, in every region. 18+ means 18+.
- Where a law requires a document check, such as several US states, the UK and France, the fan shows an ID and takes a live selfie
- Elsewhere, a facial age estimate with a safety buffer is used, and if the estimate is under 25, an ID check follows
- It takes about a minute, happens once and stays valid until the rule of the region asks again
Creators get the same protection from the other side: fans who passed are real adults. Our marketing pages stay safe for work, and explicit content sits behind the check. See the full safety rules and the fan experience on OnlyEighteen for fans. Creators themselves verify with a government ID and a live selfie, and co-performer records follow 18 USC 2257.
Frequently asked questions
What is age verification for adult sites?
It is a check that a visitor is at least 18 before explicit content is shown, using a method stronger than a self declaration button.
Which US states have age verification laws?
More than twenty, starting with Louisiana in 2023 and including Utah, Virginia, Mississippi, Texas, Florida and Tennessee. The list keeps growing, so check current rules for your state.
Does the UK require age verification?
Yes, the Online Safety Act requires highly effective age assurance for services showing pornographic content to UK users, enforced by Ofcom since 2025.
Which methods count as age verification?
Common accepted methods are a government ID matched to a live selfie and facial age estimation. Self declaration is not accepted under the new laws.
How does OnlyEighteen verify fans?
Every fan is checked before the first purchase, with ID and live selfie where the law requires it and a facial age estimate with a safety buffer elsewhere.
